Come May, commuters will be forced to withstand the scorching sun as they wait for buses and autos on busy roads. The reason: building bus stop shelters is still in planning stage.
Currently, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the transport department are busy playing passing the buck. HUDA, which was supposed to construct the shelters, said it had already floated tenders a few years ago.
Yet, there is not a single bus stop shelter on the 18-km stretch from the Delhi-Gurgaon border toll plaza to Kherki Daula or at IFFCO Chowk. The five-kilometre stretch from Guru Dronacharya Metro Station to IFFCO Chowk too is without a shelter.
The administration still does not have any time frame for the purpose. Earlier, it had said that a four-member committee will be set up to address the issue.
Now HUDA official Nitin Yadav said, “We have asked GM Roadways for the location. Shelters would be constructed according to their requirement.” Despite several attempts, no official from Haryana Roadways could be contacted.
Meanwhile, daily passengers have their own stories to tell. “Almost 75% of the population depends on public transport. But the administration has failed to provide us even one shelter under which we can avoid the sun and rain,” said Geeta Bhatia, a daily commuter.
