In an emergency, senior Gurgaon police officers would now be able look directly into 40 vulnerable locations — malls, schools, hotels, office complexes and hospitals — with the help of the CCTV cameras installed there.
For this, the police have started acquiring the IP (Internet Protocol) addresses and passwords of the internet connectivity in sealed envelopes which would be opened only in the event of "need".
In a security audit conducted by the police department in the east police district, it located 40 vulnerable residential and commercial premises that could become potential targets of the terrorists. The east police district includes posh localities such as DLF City, Sushant Lok and Cybercity.
"We have already tried this model in some of the complexes from where we have acquired the IP addresses. With the help of this, I was able to look into the complex through the CCTV and IP cameras on my laptop with the help of internet-networking sitting in my own office. We have asked the owners of all 40 locations to provide us their IP addresses and passwords," said DCP (East) Vikas Kumar Arora. He clarified that the IP addresses and passwords were invited in sealed envelopes.
These envelopes, he said, would only be opened in the event of a hostage situation or an attack by the terrorists and not before that, to maintain the privacy of the premises. Arora said there were several office complexes that house a number of MNCs. These, too, were vulnerable locations apart from schools, hospitals, hotels and malls.
