Getting a confession out of Gurunath Meiyappan was no easy task for the Mumbai crime branch. Officials had to work out a strong strategy to grill Gurunath, 37, the owner of Chennai Super Kings.
During his first half an hour with crime branch officials on Friday, a defiant Gurunath denied any knowledge of the betting racket to a team of interrogators led by joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy and additional commissioner of police (crime) Niket Kaushik.
However, Gurunath admitted of knowing arrested bookie Vindoo Dara Singh. To this, the police produced a copy of the transcript of a telephonic conversation between him and Vindoo. That’s when the grit started to give way.
Sources said he admitted to being involved in placing bets on T20 matches for the last two years and winning a lot of money. He has also admitted to leaking inside information of the CSK to Vindoo.
Police sources said the BCCI chief’s son was treated like any other accused and had to sleep on the floor in his lock-up. In the morning, he had tea and idli at the police canteen, sources added.
