The Guwahati University Teachers Association has taken a serious note of Assam Governor Lt Gen (retd) Ajai Singh in his capacity as the Guwahati University’s Chancellor granting grace marks to 12 failed MBBS final 2005 examinees.
Terming the Governor versus Guwahati University controversy as unfortunate, GUTA president A Rahman said such an order by a governor for granting of grace marks to unsuccessful students was unprecedented.
Talking to the media in Guwahati, Rahman asserted that the governor’s unprecedented order awarding grace marks in internal assessment undermined the judgement of the teachers. Instead of “concentrating on petty issues such as granting of grace marks to a few students, the Chancellor should have used his powers to solve the burning problems such as dilapidated condition of hostels and acute financial crisis facing the University.
He regretted the Governor was yet to give the GUTA an appointment in the last few months for discussing the vital issues confronting the Instititution. He also said grace marks were awarded only if a large number of students did not get pass marks in a particular subject, after the Controller of Examinations held a meeting of the examination committee constituted by the Academic Council to discuss details.
