A major mishap was averted after the roof of a two-storey government school building, which was set to witness live TV address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Teachers’ Day, collapsed in Janakganj locality around 10am on Friday. The century-old building had been declared unsafe by the PWD authorities long ago.

However, no casualty was reported as students were asked to come to school about 1pm. Only school principal LS Tyagi and cleaning staff were present at the time of incident.

Meanwhile, joint director of education department S Shukla said an inquiry has been ordered. The damaged portion of the building, including hall, has been closed after the incident but the school will function as normal, said school principal Tyagi.

The school houses nearly 1,100 students in two shifts including primary section and higher secondary section.
