Gyms, hi-tech arms to keep police terror-ready

The police are now on a fitness drive and not just in terms of their physical health but also the level of preparedness to handle terror.

The police are now on a fitness drive and not just in terms of their physical health but also the level of preparedness to handle terror.

The state government has announced a state-of-the-art gymnasium for the city police.

State Home Minister Jayant Patil, on Thursday at a function organised by the Mumbai police at Naigaum police headquarters, said the gymnasium will be built at a cost of Rs 85 lakh in Naigaum.

Police Commissioner D Sivanandhan also stressed on keeping policemen in good health to combat terrorists. “A kitchen at a cost of Rs 55 lakh will come up in Naigaum where the policemen can get healthy food. Over 140 policemen die every year due to health related problems,” Sivanandhan said.

Patil also announced a fitness programme wherein every policeman will undergo a total health profile check and will be certified. Physical health apart, the state is also taking efforts to improve the physical strength of the force.
