The radical Islamist group Hamas won 76 of the 132 seats in the Palestinian general election against 43 for the ruling Fatah party, the head of the central elections commission said on Thursday.

Hanna Nasser made the announcement at a press conference, 24 hours after polls closed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Fatah had already conceded defeat to Hamas, with prime minister Ahmed Qorei submitting his resignation to Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas.
