With an effort to rotate the pitch, reconstruct the stands covering all elements, and building improved VIP and media areas, the construction began in 1998. In 2000, it hosted its first match between Germany and Greece.

The Hamburg stadium is home to Hamburg SV, which is the only club to play at the highest level of the Bundesliga since it began in 42 years ago.
