The saffron party has further consolidated its vote bank in the district by declaring former chief minister and “son of the soil” Prem Kumar Dhumal as its chief ministerial candidate.

“It’s a question of backing the chief minister. It’s time for Hamirpur to show solidarity for our man. More so as he has a liberal attitude towards the people, which very few politicians have,” said Ved Bhushan, an ex-serviceman from Hamirpur.

For him and many other villagers in the district, the corruption issues raised by the Congress government against Dhumal and his previous regime are not true. “It’s the job of the political parties and leaders to indulge in allegations and counter-allegations.

All governments function alike. But people go by their own issues and impressions,” said O.P. Shrama, a retired headmaster from Amman.

At present BJP has 3 sitting MLAs out of the five seats in Hamirpur. The party also has an edge over the Congress due to infighting in the party in two assembly constituencies, Mewa and Nadaunta.

However, the only cause for concern is the Nadaun constituency with Congress having its state Youth Congress president and MLA, Sukhwinder Sukhu at the helm.

But it would still be tough for Sukhu to win the seat with Vijai Agnihotri contesting the seat for the BJP.
