Talking to newsmen here, Shukla did not rule out hand of competitors in the damage to the optical fibres. It may be pointed out that the BSNL network was collapsed on October 2 in the city.

Replying to a query, the GM, “On October 2 no agency was engaged in the digging work of the road still the optical fibers of BSNL were found to be damaged in at least four points.” Somehow we managed to restore the connectivity from Agra and our staff managed to locate the faults, added Shukla.

“This clearly points out that the BSNL rivals, who are wary of its increasing strength, are behind the incident,” asserted Shukla.

He said the ‘BSNL Week’ was being observed from October 3 to October 10 to celebrate completion of six-year of the constitution of the organisation in the city. Shukla also said that pre-paid and post-paid SIM cards were easily available at the PCOs in the city.

“In the eastern UP circle, the BSNL has the highest number of 22 lakh subscribers and in Kanpur it has 1,73,282 connections,” said Shukla.

The GM also said that the much-awaited service of conversion of pre-paid SIM cards into post-paid and vice-versa was also available. A subscriber has to fill up a separate form for availing this facility, said he.

Commenting on a query, Shukla said, “In order to facilitate the payment of bills for post-paid subscribers an agreement has been made with a private company.” The company would install automatic machines in the city next year.

The machine would accept cheques and Rs 3.50 per cheque would be paid as commission to the company, added Shukla. He also said that special camps would be organised in all the exchanges for the redressal of complaints
