'Harassment by two' drives 14-year-old Dalit to suicide

A 14-year-old Dalit girl of Kalayat town of the district burnt herself to death on Sunday.

According to her family members, she took the extreme step after she was constantly tormented by two youths - Vicky and Amit - of the same town.

The victim's father in his complained to the police had alleged that his daughter, a Class-8 student, was constantly harassed by the two men. “Even when I talked to the families of the two youths, the issue was not resolved. We even had a verbal spat, which deteriorated the scenario,” he told the police.

The victim, after being allegedly harassed by the youths again on Sunday morning, on returning home allegedly sprinkled kerosene on herself and set herself afire.

The victim's father rushed into the house after hearing her cries and found her on fire. Thereafter, he took her to Indira Gandhi Multi-Speciality Hospital in Kaithal, from where doctors referred her to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, in a critical condition.

The police registered a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the two youths.
