THE SUPREME Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and other members of his family, on a PIL alleging that they had "amassed wealth and property disproportionate to their known sources of income by misusing their power and authority".

A bench headed by Justice Ruma Pal issued the notices on the PIL, filed by one Vishwanath Chaturvedi, seeking a direction to the Centre to probe the allegations and initiate criminal prosecution against the CM and other members of his family.

Among others who were issued notices were Mulayam's son Akhilesh Yadav (a Lok Sabha member), his wife Dimple Yadav and stepson Prateek Yadav. The court also sought translated copies of several sale deeds annexed by the petitioner. (The deeds were in Hindi.)

The petition said Mulayam had under the UP Ministers and Legislators (Publication of Assets and Liabilities) Act, 1975 -- which makes it mandatory for legislators to disclose their assets -- revealed only one residential plot at Etawa and three bighas agriculural land and one house in his village.

The petition stated the members of Mulayam's family had no source of income other than their full-time political activities. They had also undervalued the property while disclosing them, it alleged.
