FARMERS FROM Harda, who had been agitating in the Capital for the past two days under the aegis of the MP unit of the Samajwadi Jan Parishad to press for their demands including irrigation facilities and crop-loss compensation, on Thursday deferred their agitation for a week following assurance from the Government for survey of the affected villages.
The divisional Commissioner B R Naidu reportedly assured the farmers to personally tour the 28 affected villages in Harda and Timarni blocks of the Harda district, to assess the loss.
He also assured the agitating farmers that an inquiry will be conducted into the irregularities in the preparation of new Below Poverty Line (BPL) list, Samajwadi Jan Parishad State general secretary Shamim Modi told mediapersons on Thursday.
The farmers alleged that crops were damaged due to the failure of the Harda district administration in releasing water in the sub-canals of Tawa Dam.
Modi said that these 28 villages, situated at the tail-end of the minor canal of the dam did not receive a drop of water during the Rabi season.
The farmers had been asked to go ahead with sowing with assurance of irrigation water, Modi claimed.

{{/usCountry}}Modi also highlighted the demands of the poor people of Harda, Betul and Khandwa for inclusion in the BPL list and foodgrains from the fair price shops on their old ration cards and hike in the wages under the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Betul and Khandwa areas. Modi said that the workers should get the minimum prescribed wages of Rs 90 per day.
