Days after he threatened to resign from his post over selection of some party candidates for the coming assembly elections, Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar has fallen in line and is now seeking votes for those he had strongly opposed.
Last month, Tanwar had walked out of a party poll panel meeting and threatened to quit his post after the central leadership overruled his objections and fielded leaders who had allegedly taken money from people seeking change of land use for various purposes.
He had told the panel that election tickets to tainted leaders would send a wrong signal at a time when the party was struggling to recover from its worst-ever defeat in the general election.
But later, Tanwar dropped his plan to quit the party post and also decided to campaign for those party candidates whom he had opposed.
“There is the realisation that since tickets have been announced it would be not be in the interest of the party if he stays away from campaigning for those candidates and the opposition will try to exploit that,” a senior leader said.
Another leader, however, said the directive came from the party leadership and Tanwar was asked to step up his campaigning given that the Congress is facing a tough election in the state it has ruled for 10 consecutive years.
