"Hasina is a very good friend of mine and we share a special bonding. I am very happy that she is going to be the next prime minister of Bangladesh. Her victory is my victory," Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata.

"I wish her all the luck and hope she follows her father and the founding leader of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's principles."

Banerjee further said Hasina's regime will help to strengthen the bond between India and Bangladesh.

"I am very hopeful that the bond between India and Bangladesh will strengthen during Hasina's tenure as the prime minister. We will work united at economic, creative and political development that will be beneficial to people of both countries," Banerjee said.

The Trinamool Congress chief said: "Hasina's victory proves that people's faith in democracy has been restored after years in Bangladesh. I hope democracy, in its true sense, returns to West Bengal too."

Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the nine-party alliance led by her Awami League raced to a landslide victory Tuesday, winning 258 seats of the 299 seats that figured in Bangladesh's ninth general election.
