The student has been identified as Vikram Singh, a student of B-Tech III chemical engineering. Soon after the incident, students and faculty rushed the injured student to a private hospital in Vikas Nagar.

According to information, the boys of II and III year of chemical engineering in a bid to choose Mr and Miss Chemical Engineering to be held later, had published scores of girl students mentioning several vulgar parameters and remarks. On seeing the list on Thursday, girls of II and III year rebuked a student Vikram Singh and his friend at the college canteen. A III year girl of the chemical engineering department while talking to HT said, “There was no such official competition in the college as there was no prior information about such an event from the director or any concerned faculty in the college.” She added, “Following the incident, the boys threatened girls that if any one of us are seen on the college premises, then she would be held responsible for her misdemeanor.” The girl of chemical engineering department also said that girls after seeing derogatory and obscene comments about them complained to senior girls, who scolded the boys.

Vikram Singh after listening to all this, got depressed and after consuming several sleeping pills, cut his wrist with blade. After this, Vikram called up his classmate Devendra and told him about his act. Soon rest of the students and faculty took Vikram to the hospital from where he was discharged late in the evening on Friday. After getting information, parents of Vikram arrived from Varanasi and took him back to Varanasi for some time. Later, talking to HT KA Mishra Dean of students affair HBTI said, “It appears to be a case of misunderstanding between boys and girls of the chemical engineering department. We have received a written complaint from the boys and girls.”

Mishra also said that parents of Vikram have been asked to know the exact incident that forced him to resort to an attempt suicide. Meanwhile, tension between boys and girls prevailed on the college premises following the incident on Thursday.
