Jammu and Kashmir High Court today directed the state government to lift restriction on the movement of the hardline Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, placed under house arrest since September nine.
Chief Justice Barin Gosh, after hearing the arguments of counsel for Geelani, said there was no justification in keeping the octogenarian leader confined in his residence.
However, he fixed October 23 for final hearing of the case.
Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom appearing on behalf of Geelani argued that Geelani, being ill, had to regularly undergo medical check-ups but authorities were not allowing doctors to visit him.
He requested that Geelani be allowed to move freely without any restrictions.
Geelani's son-in-law, Altaf Fantoosh on Thursday last had moved a petition to the High Court.
Geelani, chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference, was released on the court orders on September 8 after 95 days imprisonment under Public Safety Act but was placed under house arrest next day.
The Hurriyat leader was arrested on June 7 following the week-long strike in valley against alleged rape and murder of Asiya (17) and her pregnant sister-in-law Neelofer (22) in Shopian district of south Kashmir.
