Two days after a woman died when she was pushed in front of a truck for resisting harassment, the Andhra Pradesh high court sought a report from the state police on Wednesday.
The court took suo motu cognisance of the incident in Tenali town of Guntur district on the basis of media reports.
B Suneela (45), a housewife, and her daughter, a B Tech student, were returning home after shopping a little past 9 pm on Monday when a group of drunken men accosted them at Gandhi Chowk.
When one of the men allegedly tried to grope the girl, her mother caught hold of his collar and pushed him away. That, said police, angered the group, which then turned on Suneela and pushed her in front of a speeding lorry.
A seriously injured Suneela was rushed to the NRI General Hospital in nearby Mangalagiri town, but died on the way.
All seven accused were arrested on Tuesday following a complaint by Suneela’s husband, B Babu Rao, a schoolteacher. Five of the accused are auto drivers.
The incident caused widespread public outrage with people and leaders of various political parties taking to the streets on Wednesday demanding stringent punishment for the guilty. “We are considering booking all the accused under the new law on rape,” said SP, Guntur Rural, J Satyanarayana.
