IN A significant order, the Allahabad High Court has directed the Government of India and the Uttar Pradesh Government to prepare a scheme for setting up of a board to provide minimum wages and other welfare schemes for the sewaks/workers working in the temples and other religious places and charitable establishments.

The court has directed that the board be constituted on the lines of the UP Muslim Wakf Act 1960 with suitable amendments commensurate to the requirements of Hindu religion, representing all sects falling within the fold of Hinduism.
The court said that the board should be self-governing, autonomous and regard being had to tenets, customs and other provisions governing to such sects.
The board should register all such religious and charitable establishments, endowments according to the norms represented by Maths, monasteries, temples, religious and charitable trusts or societies through the heads of all sects.
The Central as well State Government should also frame welfare schemes for providing minimum wages to such workers as well as other welfare measures relating to such workers/employee, directed the Court.
This order was passed by Justice SN Srivastava in a writ petition filed by Shree Satya Narain Tulsi Manas Mandir, Durga Kund, Varanasi against which the proceedings under Minimum Wages Act were initiated.

{{/usCountry}}The court also said that such scheme, as stated above, should be prepared after inviting objections from all sections in the fold of Hindu religion. The court directed that the scheme so framed might be placed in the court after three months. The court will now hear this case on September 4,2006.
