ACCEPTING THE plea of petitioners Gulab Singh and others, the Allahabad High Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the murder of former MLA Rama Kant Mishra.

Passing the order, a division bench, comprising Justice Imtiyaz Murtaza and Justice Amar Saran, asked the CBI to investigate about the involvement of the petitioners in the murder.
The court in its order further observed that if it was found that the petitioners were not involved in the crime, it must also try and find the real culprits. The court also asked the CBI to make efforts to complete the inquiry within three months. However, the court vacated the stay of arrest order granted earlier in favour of the petitioner.
Two persons, riding on motor-cycle, had thrown acid on Mishra on April 19, 2006, when he came out of his house at Balrampur for morning walk. Later, Mishra died at Safdarjang hospital in New Delhi.
His son lodged an FIR naming Gulab Singh and his sons as the accused. The incident was ‘talk of the town’ for quite a few days, as the husband and sons of the then chairperson of the Allahabad Zila Panchayat, Keshri Devi were named the main accused by the police.
