THE ALLAHABAD High Court rejected a writ petition that voter list, nomination forms and other relevant papers relating to Panchayat and local bodies election be prepared and published in Urdu (second official language).
Passing this order on a writ petition filed by the UP Urdu Development Organisation, a Division Bench comprising Justice Sushil Harkauli and Justice Vikram Nath, also rejected the claim made by the petitioner that Urdu knowing persons be appointed as polling officers/Urdu translators at every polling centre and also provide Urdu voter list to the recognised political parties along with Hindi voter list.
The court observed, “The prayer that in future Urdu knowing persons should be appointed as polling officers at polling centres is misconceived as it is not supported by any such statutory obligation and accordingly rejected”.
However, the court directed the State government to get the Urdu publication done, unless already done, of each of nine rules/regulations relating to Kshetriya Panchayat and Zila Panchayat in the official Gazette within six months.
Passing these directives, the court disposed of the writ petition filed by the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Development Organisation.

A TWO-DAY legal workshop will be organised by the Human Rights Law Network on January 21 and 22 at Nirala Sabhagar, Allahabad University. Advocate KK Roy, who is convenor of the workshop, said that several Supreme Court lawyers and human right activists would take part in this workshop.

The Advocates’ Association of the Allahabad High Court has passed a resolution condemning the Nauchandi Express incident. The Association passed the resolution at a meeting of its executive council held on Wednesday which was presided over by Satish Trivedi, president of the Association.
Legal aid camp at Mela
ONE COULD do yeoman’s service even with limited resources provided he or she was devoted to serve humanity, said Justice RC Deepak of the Allahabad High Court.He was speaking after inaugurating a free legal aid camp in the Magh Mela area here on Thursday evening. The Junior Lawyers’ Association of UP organised the camp. Chief guest at the function, Justice Deepak appreciated the efforts of the organisers for providing free legal aid to the pilgrims who came to the Mela.
