Four years after parents challenged the hike in school fees in Gurgaon, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on May 1 finally ordered that there will be no such increase. But schools continue to stick to their earlier statement that they have revised the fees as per a government order.
The schools have said that they have already hiked fee by 15-30% for the 2012-13 session after informing the education department.
On May 1, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued directions that no school would increase fees without the consent of the Education Board.
School associations, however, still maintain that such a decision would complicate the education system.
Col. Kr. Pratap Singh, president, Haryana Progressive School Conference, said, "It is the school management's prerogative to decide annual fees. Moreover, the monitoring of fees by the CBSE is not easy. This is unnecessary interference and will complicate the education system."
"Whatever we charge from students as fees is in consent with the education department and we file a statutory Form VI for this. When we are already following the norms, the question of additional consent doesn't arise," said Sudha Goel, Principal of the Scottish High International School. However, parents of wards beg to differ.
Sunil Sharma, the father of a Class 6 student, said, "Education in this city is certainly beyond the reach of the common man. Though schools have revised their annual fees this year too, let's hope that the situation will be better next year and schools will not revise fees as per their wish."
