A MINOR mistake can give a life-long problem to your infant. Even before it is born.

Experts gathered at the second day on Wednesday of the 5th National Conference on Head and Neck Oncology organised at Scientific Convention Centre say ENT problems can come to a child even before birth.
Says Dr Naresh Bhatia, “Intake of excessive medicines by a pregnant women may land the child in trouble. Ear may get damaged out of severe infection with the use of multiple medicines.”
He said deformity of ear is becoming common in rural parts of the country, as doctors are not paying heed to this problem. The focus is on the mother but not on the child who cannot tell the illeffects of the medicines in use.
“The women do not go for the right posture during breast-feeding also. They usually lay the child prostrate while breast-feeding but it’s a wrong posture which can end up in loss of hearing power. The head of a child while breast-feeding should be higher than the rest of the body,” Dr Bhatia stated.
Dr Patrik Gulene, president of the Head and Neck Surgery Association of Canada, said that the age of patients with oral cancer has come down from the average 40 to 25. “Youths are fast becoming patients of oral cancer and they even fail to identify it in early stages,” he said.

“If your tongue has gone stiff in movement and there are boils for weeks together. Even a minor hurt on the tongue does not heals early and there are red marks or rashed. Wake up! It could just be the start of oral cancer,” said Dr Gulene.
“We have made advances up to the level that a complete portion of the tongue or jaw can be replaced with the flesh and bone of any other suitable part of the body. This is applied when the portion of tongue is cut for cancer” he said.
Dr Bhatia said that speech deformity can now be cure with simple laser technique.
