Torrential rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir bringing much-needed respite to the people from the intense heat wave but threw life out of gear as the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked due to landslides.
Heavy rainfall has been recorded in almost all parts of Kashmir valley while Jammu region has also received some rainfall since Wednesday, a weather department official said.
While Kupwara recorded the highest rainfall of 42.7 mm, Srinagar city had also received 27 mm of rainfall upto 8.30 am this morning, the official said.
Pahalgam (25.2 mm), Qazigund (21.2 mm), Banihal (9.8 mm), Batote (3.8 mm), Katra (1.3 mm) and Jammu city (0.2mm) also recieved substantial rainfall, he told.
The rains brought down the day and night temperatures in Kashmir by almost 10 degrees. The maximum temperature for yesterday was recorded at 27.2 degree celsius while the night temperature was a genial 16.2 degrees celsius.
This is a substantial drop considering the day temperature was close to 36 degrees celsius for most of the last week while the night temperature was as high as 26 degrees.
However, the rainfall has snapped the only road link between Kashmir valley and rest of the country as Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked by landslides at Ramban, sources said.
