Heavy rains continued to lash most parts of Kerala claiming seven more lives today taking the toll in the last 11 days to 28 as large-scale damages, especially in northern districts, was reported. Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts were the worst-hit.
Revenue Minister K P Rajendran, on a visit to rain-ravaged Wayanad said the situation in the district was highly critical. Rivers and rivulets were overflowing and a series of landslips occurred in the area wreaking havoc on agricultural property and disrupting road traffic.
The National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) team was assisting in relief and rescue operations in Wayanad and Malappuram, where the state machinery had also been geared up to meet the situation.
According to official sources in Thiruvananthapuram, Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran has offered to send more Central forces if necessary to tackle the situation in the state.
A construction worker died at Kuttichira in Kozhikode when a house under construction collapsed and a 60 year-old man was swept away in flash floods at Kavilumpara in the district.
Two persons were reportedly electrocuted in Malappuram and another person died when he slipped into an overflowing pond at Koipally in Kannur.
