Heavy rains, accompanied by gusty winds, lashed the city since Wednesday night inundating low lying areas and disrupting rail and road traffic for a brief while in the morning peak hours.
Since early morning, suburban trains were running 45 minutes to one hour behind schedule and vehicles continued to move at snail's pace on the roads due to water logging because of heavy downpour.
Water logging was reported in low lying areas such as Sion, Matunga, Lower Parel, Dharavi and Andheri. Schools in some areas closed down early as private buses did not ply.
Heavy rains with gusty winds uprooted about 50 trees across the city, fire brigade sources said. Minor landslides were also reported in some hilly areas. However, no one was injured.
Local Meteorological centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rains in the city and suburbs during the next twenty four hours.
Till 8 am, the weather office at Colaba in south Mumbai recorded 147.7 mm rainfall while the Santa Cruz recorded 104.9 mm. This was the season's first heavy rainfall.
