The 2002 Wimbledon champion always had the edge in an entertaining duel against 28-year-old Gimelstob, who was troubled by a shoulder injury throughout.

Hewitt took the first set tiebreak 7-5 on Centre Court and an early break secured the Australian the second.

In the third set Gimelstob double-faulted to lose serve at 5-5 and Hewitt duly served out for a victory.

His next encounter sets up a last-16 meeting with another American, Taylor Dent.
