The students were earlier regularly served notices warning them to vacate the rooms or face action but in vain.

Tuesday's raid was expected to be the toughest for the varsity officials with the hostel considered to be having the largest number of illegal inmates residing there and having majority of its 165 rooms being occupied by the students illegally.

However, in the face of determined varsity officials backed by a heavy contingent of security personnel including two Circle Officers and an Additional City Magistrate, the illegal inmates gave up after trying to put up a mild resistance.

"We found that only 35 inmates were bonafide allotees and the rest 135 living in the rooms illegally. The rooms have been vacated and will be handed over to the students who have been duly allotted the rooms by the AU administration," informed Prof HN Mishra.

With Dean Students Welfare Prof Jagdamba Singh being out of the city, Assistant DSW Deep Shukla represented Prof Singh in the raid, Prof Mishra informed.

It is to be recalled that on February 1, upset over the news of the impending raid on Holland Hall Hostel by the AU officials to evict illegal inmates, dozens of hostel inmates had held protest demonstrations throughout the day at the Hostel gates.

Later, the inmates had met the DSW Prof Jagdamba Singh and demanded setting up of a three-member committee to first probe the reasons for the students being unable to deposit the fee and only then begin the eviction exercise. The inmates had claimed that they have neither been served with the notice to deposit the hostel fee or even vacate the hostel rooms. They had claimed that despite repeated attempts to inquire about the date for depositing the hostel fee, they were repeatedly stalled and refused on the excuse that the hostel is to be fully vacated.

They had expressed their lack of confidence in the hostel superintendent and claimed that they were ready to deposit hostel fee but that should be under direct supervision of the AU authorities.
