All government high schools in Himachal Pradesh would be upgraded to senior secondary schools in a phased manner. The state would have only elementary and senior secondary schools in the future, an official spokesman said on Wednesday.

He said educational institutions upto class VIII had been brought under the Directorate of Elementary Education while the Directorate of Secondary Education would take care of matters pertaining to the higher classes.

Till the time of upgradation, the existing high schools would remain under the control of Directorate of Secondary Education, the spokesman added. The government had converted the Directorate of Primary Education into the Directorate of Elementary Education after the Rs 532 crore Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

It also proposes to open about 2,000 middle schools to ensure that no child in the age group 6-14 years is left out from the ambit of education.
