A Local court on Monday issued a notice to Vijit Singh after the police moved an application seeking cancellation of bail and his arrest in a hit-and-run case in which a girl was killed.
The police told District and Sessions Judge Sharad Chandar Shotriya that Singh was being charged under IPC's Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). Earlier, Singh, step grandson of Gayatri Devi, wife of former ruler of Jaipur Sawai Mansingh, was booked under 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence). On December 15, Singh drove his Volkswagen into a group of engineering students from Kota in the city on a study tour. Babita Chaudhry was killed in the accident. Singh was found to be driving drunk. He was arrested the next day, but got bail.
"A probe has been completed and police have decided to change the IPC Section from 304 (A) to 304, which can invite a maximum punishment of 10 years," DGP K.S. Bains said.
He had told HT on Sunday that CM Ashok Gehlot had asked him to ensure a fair probe in the case, irrespective of the fact that Singh hailed from a prominent family. Bains also admitted that investigating officer Manohar Singh had been replaced with inspector Dalip Sharma.
