"Our stand is clear that Assembly elections should be held before the term of this Assembly expires in November," former union minister of state for defence and senior BJP leader Chaman Lal Gupta told reporters in Jammu on Wednesday.

He said there should be no delay in elections. "We are hopeful that both the state and Centre would stand by their commitment of holding elections on time," he said.

Gupta alleged the Congress wanted to delay polls in the state because it had lost its base in Jammu due to the agitation over the Amarnath land row.

He accused the Congress and Peoples Democratic Party of hatching a conspiracy on the Amarnath land issue with designs to exploit votebank politics in Kashmir as also Jammu region.

Asked about the stand of the party in the coming elections, Gupta said that BJP would focus on "delimitation, discrimination and separate budget for Jammu region".
