NEARLY 6,000 teachers of aided higher secondary schools and colleges will not able to celebrate Holi this year due to non-disbursement of their salaries for the month of February so far.
Despite the Chief Secretary’s clear directives to disburse the salaries on the first day of every month, the order does not seem effective in the education department.
Teachers and employees of several departments usually get their salaries three or four weeks later. But this month they are irate ire at not getting their salaries so far though Holi is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
Their families are not in a position to celebrate Holi this year due to the apathetic policy of the State Government.
Nearly 6,000 teachers and employees have been working in 180 aided secondary schools in the district and none of them has got his or her salary so far. Sources said the fund for the salary was already available but the income tax formality had proved to be the biggest hurdle in disbursement of salary this month.
Till 2005, teachers and non-teaching staff used to submit their income tax details to the District Inspector of Schools. This year, the treasurery officer has informed the teachers and employees to submit their income details to him approved by a chartered accountant.

The Teachers’ Association has flayed the new rule of having approval from the Chartered Accountant and demanded that the State Government stop their harassment with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, teachers of Government Inter College have not been paid salary for three months.
The Panchayat Department is the worst affected where the employees have not been given salary since November 2005.
The State Joint Council for Teachers and Employees has requested the District Magistrate to order disbursement of their salaries under the TR 27 head but he has not shown even the slightest interest in this direction.
