After the late Morarji Desai, it would seem that our Home Minister Shivraj Patil seems to be aiming for the highest civilian honour conferred by Pakistan for espousing its cause. By giving Pakistan a clean chit in Srinagar, Mr Patil has demonstrated his ignorance of ground realities. We can only be happy that he is not in line to become president.

Insecure leaders

This is with reference to your editorial Pandering to insecurity (July 3). It is high time we cut down on expenses that add to our economic burden. As the editorial noted, most of our political leaders consider having the trappings of security as more of a prestige issue than a real security concern. This is disheartening.

No one knows which government officials came up with the idea of following the Shanghai model for Mumbai and why the New York/London/Hong Kong models have been ignored. But the fact is with a crumbling civic infrastructure, an inefficient drainage system, inadequate water supply, traffic jams and overcrowded trains, things are going down the drain in Mumbai.

In high places

The presidential poll has created lot of bitterness. The veracity of the accusations levelled against Pratibha Patil must be determined. It is important that people know the credentials of the person who occupies the highest office in the land.
