This could well have been a scene straight out of a Hindi potboiler. But for actor Suresh Oberoi it was a time to savour the sweet victory after 38 years of court battle.
After getting back the house, which was built by his father, after a long battle starting from the lowest court and ending up at the Supreme Court, the actor held back his tears as he stepped into the building on lane No 13 in the Himayatnagar locality here for the first time on Tuesday.
Earlier this year, a vacation bench of Supreme Court comprising justices A.R. Lakshmanan and Altamas Kabir upheld an Andhra Pradesh High Court order asking tenant Kishore Tagarsse, who ran a nursing home in the building, to vacate the house within nine months. Oberoi’s father had rented the house to the doctor for running a nursing home nearly 50 years back for Rs 1,000 per month.
“I wish we had got back the house when my parents were alive. It is not a mere brick and mortar house for me. It was associated with the dreams, hopes and aspirations of my parents. My father had built it for my mother. I have also spent a great part of teenage years in this house,” Oberoi said.
However, it was a virtual anti-climax for the residents of the middle-class locality who had anticipated the entire Oberoi clan, particularly son Viviek Oberoi, to turn up. But Suresh Oberoi came alone and very quietly, accompanied by a local contact. He took possession of the house from the tenant, by taking the keys and papers. He went around the house, now in very bad state, reminiscing about his growing years.

{{/usCountry}}Having gone through a long struggle for the house, the actor has become philosophical. “Now, I believe in ‘karma’. Whatever is in your ‘karma’, will happen,” he says. What are his plans? Will he renovate the house or build it again? “May be I will build it again so that members of the family can stay here when they come to Hyderabad.”
