Former India cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and bureaucrat Ramesh Sinha (IAS Retd) were conferred doctorates by Padma Shree Dr. D.Y. Patil University at its third annual convocation on Wednesday.
The university conferred the award of Doctor of Science to Navinchandra Ramgoolam and Sunil Gavaskar and Doctor of Literature to R.C. Sinha.
Sheilabai Bappoo, Minister of Social Security, Mauritius accepted the doctorate on behalf of the Mauritian prime minister. Padma Shree D.Y. Patil, the chancellor of the university presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion Governor Jamir said, “Proper knowledge leads to proper action and proper action leads to progress, prosperity, peace and unlimited joy.”
Addressing the gathering former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said, “This is an incredible honour for somebody who barely managed to get through a BA degree. Cricket was not really a career option in my time. I wanted to become a doctor like my aunt who is 80-year-old now and still practicing. Very early, however, I realised, that I did not have the kidneys to become a doctor!”
“My inspiration was my uncle Madhav Mantri who played for India in 1950. I thank the university for this doctorate, which is an honour for Indian cricket, for all those who supported me and played with me. This university, which has one of the best cricket stadiums in the world, is doing a great job. It is helping shape the future of our country.”

Sinha, vice-chairman and managing director of Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd said, “The world is set to become a global community which can only grow by sharing of knowledge and expertise and merger of man and machine. This can happen when institutions like this university begin to address the task of ensuring that our insfrastructure rises to match the standards of the developed nations. It will help us compete in the shrinking global economy.”
