Finance minister Arun Jaitley said on Saturday the uncertainty over coal block allocation must end soon. The Supreme Court had recently said all captive coal block allocations since 1993 were illegal.
"I hope the uncertainty would not continue... We cannot allow the fate of coal blocks to hang in mid air," Jaitley said at a press conference.
He added the future would depend on the course of litigation. "The silver lining in the judgment is that it moves the system to a fairer method of allocation and takes away from the government the power of arbitrary allocation."
While foreign direct investment in defence and railways have been opened up, the minister expressed hope that the much awaited insurance bill would be passed in the winter session of Parliament.
