Former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who was forced to step down in July last year after being indicted by the lokayukta on charges of corruption in a mining scam, made a fresh bid for reinstatement on Tuesday.
“I will wait for a few more days. Probably the (Bharatiya Janata Party) central leadership was busy with the Rajya Sabha and assembly elections. It is all over now. I hope they will take a decision on their promise now,” he said at a press meet.
However, Yeddyurappa did not set a deadline for his reinstatement this time. “The (Karnataka) high court has cleared me in the case of the lokayukta report on illegal mining. I will wait for the high command’s decision without setting any time limit.”
Yeddyurappa, who had led the BJP to power in Karnataka and headed the party's first government in the south, also flexed his muscles while promising to take up the cause of people in the state's drought-affected districts.
“I have decided to tour the drought-affected districts of Gadag, Koppal, Raichur and Bijapur from April 8, along with party ministers, MLAs and MLCs,” he said. Yeddyurappa's statement, underlining the clout he enjoys among BJP leaders in the state, indicated that he has become a parallel power centre to chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda's government. The BJP has to factor in this power struggle while preparing for the assembly polls in April-May 2013.
