IF KESCo succeeds in bringing down the line loss to 20 per cent, the city can get much needed respite from rostering even during the daytime. After successful efforts to end the night rostering, KESCo officials have started making frantic efforts to end rostering during daytime. However, in order to make this eventuality a reality, KESCo officials have to fulfill a condition imposed by the UPPCL. According to information, the Power Corporation had asked KESCo to bring down the line loss to 20 per cent if it wanted to avail of rostering-free power supply even during the day time. It may be noted that Kanpur city has the dubious distinction of having the maximum line loss in the State. At present, line loss of the city hovers between 40 to 45 per cent including 12 per cent of Aggregate Technical and Commercial Loss (ATC).
A blue print has already been made to achieve the target of bringing down the line loss to 20 per cent in the next two years. At present the line loss of KESCo is calculated by the difference between power supply and the revenue generated. The Power Corporation supplied 30 per cent more power to KESCo during May last after the end of night rostering. Now there is pressure on KESCo officials to enhance its revenue recovery by 30 per cent.
According to a senior KESCo official, in order to streamline the power distribution system 400 more transformers would be installed in the city. Out of this, 250 alone would be installed in southern areas of the city. Apart from this a 60 mva power transformer would be installed at 220/33 kv RPH grid substation. While a 40 mva transformer would be installed at Naubasta grid substation.

Meanwhile, breakers of 16 substations have already been changed. To check power pilferage, concerted efforts are being made by KESCo officials. Double metering system would be started in heavy and small industrial units of the city. Under this system one meter would be installed on the premises of the industrial unit while another meter would be installed at the pole and it would be within the control of KESCo officials.

In order to check power pilferage in residential areas of the city, Ariel Bunch Conductors (ABC) would be laid down in place of ordinary cables. In the first phase, densely populated areas of the city are being targeted. The salient feature of ABC is its insulation, which prevents ‘katia’ connections. In the next phase, new meters secured by boxes would replace about 2.25 lakh meters.
The salient feature of this meter is that is any ‘katia’ is installed on a service cable, then this new meter would indicate it. If the efforts made by KESCo bring positive result, then by the end of the next two years line loss would come down to 20 per cent and daytime rostering would end.
