About one hundred respectful citizens associated with Jagrat Samaj-- a social organization-- are flabbergasted with the attitude of the police in dealing with cases related to women --especially criminal assault.

Initially cops are not ready to listen and even if they do after much pleading they are reluctant in lodging an FIR against the accused. And this is happening quite often, say Banwari Lal Sharma, Ranjana Kakkar and Khursheed Naqvi, three prominent persons working for the organization.
This attitude nearly defeats the purpose and makes things more difficult for us, they said while talking to HT Allahabad Live.
Not wishing to identify the police officer Naqvi said, ''we had gone to the officer with the complaint of a tribal woman who had been raped about 20 days ago but the Bara police station was reluctant to lodge her complaint. Instead cops were trying to persuade the woman to strike a compromise with the accused". When we brought this fact to the notice of the police officer his first reaction was, '' aap log nahin jante paisa ayithne ke liye aaj kal jhootha rape likhane ki tendency ho gayi hai." Even if the police officer was right what is wrong in lodging a case of rape when the victim is standing by her statement, says Naqvi.
Cops have the power to expunge a frivolous case and initiate action against the person lying, said Banwari Lal Sharma, prominent social activist of the city. "We had gone to the officer after ascertaining the veracity of the statement made by the victim who was also accompanying us. We had gathered facts from the village where people were saying that rape had been committed. If one or even a few women have been found giving false statement, it dosen't mean that every rape victim was lying, argues Sharma. They have already delayed justice by their reluctant attitude and have not even cared to get a medical examination of the victim. Justice delayed is justice denied says the law but a handful of reluctant cops are not ready to accept this dictum. It is just an exercise to keep their crime graph under control and leave the helpless citizens at the mercy of hoodllums who sit at police stations and strike a deal in every case, said another member of the organization.

{{/usCountry}}It amounts to crime against society by the protectors of law and those behind it need to be punished. There's ample evidence of rape in this case. The woman's husband Moti Lal had gone to witness the village nautanki when one Asharfi Lal entered his house and raped his wife at gun point. Victim's mother-in-law who was sitting at a neighbour's place was attacked by the rapist when she came running after hearing the shrieks of her daughter-in-law, said Ishwar Chand, who works for another organisation in the area. When we went over to the village to ascertain the facts we were threatened by some persons not to venture again in the village else they would lose their limbs, he added.
Meanwhile, CO Niharika Sharma informed that an FIR has been lodged and the accused will be punished as per law. However, she had no answer as to the cause behind the inordinate delay on the part of the police station to lodge timely FIR and initiate action in this case.
