More than 100 soldiers have been convicted after 2,300 extra-judicial killings during army rule from 1976 to 1983. Amnesty laws passed by the dictator Pinochet are now illegal.

The present government is probing more than 600 “disappearances” and killings of students dating back to 1968. But human rights groups say much more can be done.

In Argentina
Cases are being reopened after laws preventing prosecution of security forces for actions in the so-called “dirty war” from 1976 to 83 (30,000 were killed) were repealed.
