The report India has 9,000 pages of income tax laws (November 14), appears to suggest that India has a complex income tax legislation. The report is based on a Pricewaterhouse Coopers-World Bank study entitled ‘Paying taxes, the global picture’. On page 16 of the study, the number of pages of primary tax legislation in India is shown as 9,000. On page 17, the study states India has the most number of pages of primary federal tax legislation, at 9,000. It clearly refers to all central tax legislations and not just income tax.

The HT report suggests that all the 9,000 pages relate only to income tax law. The report is incorrect and against public interest.

The concerns expressed by Sagarika Ghose in 2½ years, 8 per cent what? (November 24) is shared by millions in this country. Inefficiency, corruption and divisive tendencies are increasing in the nation, particularly among the political class. We need to enact procedures of impeachment not only for misbehaviour and corruption, but also for non-performance.

Play the game

As the coach, Greg Chappell should take responsibility for the Indian cricket team’s failures. But the players are no less blameworthy. It would be better if they concentrated more on their game and performing on the field rather than for television commercials.

It is a shame that they are neglecting the very sport because of which they got fame and are being offered so much money.
