Love mushrooms but not sure what is the best way to clean them and ensure none of that grime is in your food? Well, here are five steps to clean your mushrooms.

Get started: Briefly rinse mushrooms in water and lay them out on a towel for a few hours so the mushrooms have time to release the water.

Thorough wash: Never soak fresh mushrooms or leave them sitting in water. Instead, try cleaning them by using a mushroom brush with soft bristles. You could try a vegetable scrubber too, but use lightly as bristles are stiff.

Without soaking: Another method is to wipe the mushrooms using a clean, damp towel. Don’t forget to wipe the stems, too, if you will be using them.

Tone down the taste: You can also simply soak them in a little salted water and rinse off after about 20 minutes. To tone down the taste, add a little vinegar to the salted water.

Store well: Store fresh mushrooms in a closed paper bag rather than plastic, or in an open container. Helps them to breathe better and won’t get wrinkly and dried up as fast. Keep refrigerated.
