Shobit University or Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University now won’t be able to use university in their titles.
The Human Resource Ministry has decided to withdraw the controversial notification of 2006, which allowed deemed universities to use ‘university’ along with their names.
This has created confusion with no visible difference in a university set up under an Act of Parliament or state legislature and deemed university set up under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
Professors’ Forum had filed a Public Interest Litigation in Delhi High Court stating the UGC’s notification of 1996 was illegal as it was notified without amending the Act.
The Act doesn’t provide for use of university in the title by deemed universities.
The HRD ministry told the UGC that the government accepts the petitioner’s stand that the notification could not have been issued without amending the law.
The direction was issued after HRD minister Kapil Sibal, a lawyer by profession, found the basic ground of the petition valid.
“The UGC should withdraw its notification dated September 13, 2006 and to communicate the same to all the institutions ‘deemed to be universities’ so that the latter refrain from using the word university with their names,” a letter written by HRD ministry to UGC on August 10, said.
