Huge rainfall deficit in Jammu

The entire Jammu region is under dry spell in the current winter season due to huge deficit in rainfall. After the rain fury in the first week of September, which brought the worst ever floods in the state, there has been no meaningful spell of rain.

After the rain fury in the first week of September, which brought the worst ever floods in the state, there has been no meaningful spell of rain. Number of advisories regarding rains and snow were issued, but they were way off the mark.

During the months of November, December and January, the Jammu region has experienced 68% deficit in rainfall.

In November, Jammu recorded 7.1 mm rainfall which was 29% less than the average rainfall of 9.9 mm. In December, there was no rainfall. Similarly in January, so far the region has recorded 14.3 mm of rain, which is 75% less than the average of 57.8 mm rain.

Director state meteorological department, Sonam Lotus informed, "In winters, the rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir is due to the western disturbances emanating from the Mediterranean Sea then hitting Iran, Pakistan and J&K. This year, too, there were lots of western disturbances, but it became weak while on its way to J&K. So, due to weakening of western disturbances this year, there has been a sharp decline in rainfall here."

However, the met department has predicted another western disturbance from February 2, which will remain active for couple of days. However, only the time will tell how active it will be.
