The bridegroom’s family had apparently also hiked the dowry demand from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 18 lakh, saying they had better offers from families with good-looking girls.

A. Swati (22) left a suicide note saying she could no longer bear the comments about her weight and that she felt she wasn’t suitable for him because of the same. She also absolved her fiancé and his family of all responsibility for her action. “I can’t go on reducing my weight to please some people,” the note, found in her room, read.

The police said Swati, who was working in an MNC in Cyberabad and doing well for herself, hung herself from the ceiling fan in her room at her parent’s home in Amberpet. Her mother Laxmi discovered the body when she went to call Swati for lunch.
Family members said Swati’s marriage was fixed with the son of her maternal aunt. They held the boy’s family responsible for her death. “The dowry amount was fixed at the time of negotiations three years ago. But of late, they were demanding more money. They told us they had got other marriage proposals offering more dowry,” Swati’s father A. Srinivasulu said.
