TV channels should ensure there is no infringement of someone’s privacy. Sting operation to be allowed only in larger public interest.

No repetition of same pictures time and again. Example: the Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan, where the pictures allegedly incited more violence.

No recorded conversation should be shown without permission of interviewee. Address of the person can be revealed only after permission.

The code says news items that can jeopardise ongoing probe or judicial process should not be shown, unless it is of utmost public concern.

The code favours a body of news channels to regulate content. Each channel will have to appoint an internal regulator-cum-ombudsman.

Sex and violence in the name of news should be avoided. Channels will have to give reasons for showing violence in public interest.

The code says not to air one particular person or industry’s view that is against the government policy or an ongoing issue.

Certain restrictions on news items on occult and superstition have been included in the proposed content code.

The code makes a distinction between news and entertainment. Special programmes on Bollywood would fall under the entertainment category.
