'I have no foreign bank accounts'

Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Sunday declared his assets, stating he had cash and household items worth Rs4.38 crore, jewellery, land and shares, but neither he nor his family members had accounts in banks abroad.

Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa on Sunday declared his assets, stating he had cash and household items worth R4.38 crore, jewellery, land and shares, but neither he nor his family members had accounts in banks abroad.

However, he did not provide the value of the land and jewellery, which includes 76 kg silver.

Yeddyurappa’s declaration is being seen as an attempt to counter allegations of nepotism in land denotification and allotment to his relatives.

The chief minister reportedly made his asset details public on the advice of BJP leader LK Advani, who had asked him to show greater transparency as a public figure and fight the land grab allegations made by the opposition Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress.

The JD(S) had earlier alleged that Yeddyurappa had assets worth Rs1,000 crore.

Hitting back, Yeddyurappa said in the asset declaration statement, "I also hereby declare that I as chief minister and my family members don't have any Swiss bank account or accounts in banks in any other country."

Yeddyurappa also declared he had 9.12 acre of agricultural land which was converted for industrial purposes on December 10, 2008, after he took over as chief minister.
