A senior official of the Income Tax Department here said a proposal had been submitted to the government to impart training to educated youths in computing tax and filling income tax return. On successful completion of the intensive training, these youths would be able to help taxpayers in computing their tax and fill returns at a reasonable fee.

These trained youths would be called ‘Tax Return Preparers’ and their services made available at all tax help centres to be opened in different parts of the city. The trained persons will be authorised to sign return forms and submit them, he said.

The system would not only provide job to unemployed educated youths but also help those who did not fall under the tax bracket and yet had to file nil returns under the I-T law, he said.

Sources said the city had a fairly large number of taxpayers who were ignorant about filing returns.

They could neither file returns of their own nor afford to hire the service of tax consultants because of the hefty fees they charge. For such taxpayers, the system would be a boon.
