I’ve found my dancing shoes

Not many of you may know this but back in first year of college, my close friends and I had a dance troupe. We used to perform for our college dance team or at the farewell, recounts Rannvijay.

You won’t believe what I’m doing for the next 4-5 days. To be honest, even I don’t believe it! I’m shooting for a song for a film, and as much as I’m looking forward to it, I’m also a little scared. The dance I’m shooting is something you just don’t see these days, so I’m hoping all goes well.

Not many of you may know this but back in first year of college, my close friends and I had a dance troupe. We used to perform a little bit here and there… like for our college dance team or at the farewell and stuff like that. We used to get about 1,000 bucks for a show, which we would divide between all of us. I used to save that money and after collecting 3,000-4,000, I would use it to buy a nice pair of basketball shoes. So maybe me shooting for a choreographed song isn’t all that far-fetched. Still, I couldn’t imagine I would be dancing for a film one day!

There’s one thing that especially struck me during this experience. I’m amazed at the lifestyle the dancers here lead. I guess dancing has never been looked upon as a mainstream career but these guys are doing so well — they’re earning good money, they’re travelling around the world and they’re having a blast doing it. Even their culture is entire different, a lot more westernised. In fact, the industry here is so big that a lot of foreign dancers come to India because they are good at their style but they don’t get a lot of work where they live.

Choreographers here get them work in videos or in Bollywood. Nowadays, youngsters in schools and colleges are part of B-boy groups and they dance in their spare time… I think that’s really cool. By the looks of things, just like there are film and television stars, there will soon be dancing stars. It’s definitely a possibility the youth can explore.
