THE LEFT parties continue with their high-decibel, nationwide criticism of the modernisation of Mumbai and Delhi airports, but on their home turf, they are pitching for the modernisation of Kolkata airport.

While they have told the Centre that they will accept the modernisation of airports only if it was undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and not by a private agency, they have kept silent on who should carry out the modernisation of Kolkata airport. All this, with the polls in sight.

In the Left Front’s draft manifesto for the assembly elections, the modernisation of Kolkata airport figures right at the top. The draft, prepared by CPM central committee member and state industries minister Nirupam Sen, has been sent to Front partners for approval and will be finalised at the politburo meeting on February 16.

On February 1, during the airport employees’ agitation, Rajya Sabha and CPM politburo member Brinda Karat had said in Delhi: “It is not only a matter of privatisation, it is a matter of ignoring the 22,000-strong employees of the AAI.”
